What are the skills of success?

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

As my journey of life continues to allow me the wonderful opportunity of each and everyday being able to spend time with people and help them do what needs to be done for them to become better, I am continually asked a number of the same questions over and over again.

One of those being what do you need to be successful?

Obviously there are many aspects that will have a capacity to influence your ability to be successful, but here are a few of the most common. When you are finished going through these take the time to post a reply with some of your ideas on what are the skills needed to be successful.

1. Attitude
I am a huge fan of attitude. I believe it can help you in so many ways across so many areas of life. It is something that can be changed to suit circumstance. It is something that you always have control over, although you don’t always control it. It is just a wonderful attribute to have and to utilise.

2. Hunger
Not from lack of food but from the knowledge that what you are looking for is more readily available and you have the drive to go find it and do something with what you find. The most motivated and successful people I have seen have also been the ones with the greatest hunger to succeed.

3. Perseverance
Chance are if you are pushing the boundaries not everything is going to come your way right now. But that is OK because if there is lack of success you are more knowledgeable for the experience; you become one step closer to getting it done. No matter what you keep your eyes and mind going forward.

4. Discipline
I always see discipline as key ingredient for success. Everyone wants the outcomes they seek but very few are disciplined enough to do the things required to achieve the outcomes.

5. Consistency
Regardless of what it is, know what you have to do and continue to do it each and everyday.

6. Clarity of purpose
It is vitally important that you know what you are doing and why. Doesn’t matter if no one else on the planet can relate to the reason why you are doing what you do, just as long as ‘you’ have a purpose for what you are doing?

7. Direction
The direction you take in any or all that you do must have a synergy to it. You will not be heading in the same direction at all times but you should know that which ever road you take will have you heading in the direction you know to be right for you.

8. Understanding
I know it sound like of course you would understand what you are doing. But there is more understanding needed:
What are you doing?
Why are you doing it?
What is it going to take?
What is needed for you to achieve
Who do you need help from?
What are the pitfalls?

9. Independence/ Interdependence
In all of this know that the person you must rely on most is you. But in saying that have a system set up where you are not overly reliant on others but you know they will be there when needed.

10. Pride
You must have pride in the skills you are developing to get the job done. You must take pride in the attitude needed to get the job done. You must take pride in what it is you are going to succeed at. You must take pride in the perseverance you have to get the job done. You must take pride in your consistency of thinking and of effort.

Whatever you take pride in chances are you will look after it, nurture it and care for it in a way that will bring significant benefit to you.

So what do you believe are some further skills needed to be successful?
