Does Integrity Still Matter
Wednesday 23rd June 2010
As each day comes and goes, there seems to be a corresponding increase in discussion and observation about the gradual erosion of values, standards and ethics within todays society.
A lot of this discussion and commentary is predicated or associated with what has happened or is happening in the world of high profile leadership. Business and political alike.
The Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Anderson and similar situations are fuel to the fire for the observations and opinions as to what is going wrong in the world of high end leadership today.

On one hand, we have very vocal assessment saying that the business world and their leaders are taking the wrong approach. That the world of business success is about profits rather than people. It is about success at all costs. Make the rules up as you go.
It is this type of approach that is denigrating not only the standards of ethical business practise, but also slowly influencing the eradication of standards within everyday society.
Wether this is true or not is open for discussion and I suppose debate. But with this topic under the spotlight, I find the results of a recent IBM study as very interesting to say the least.
The study is the largest known sample of one-on-one CEO interviews, with over 1,500 corporate heads and public sector leaders across 60 nations and 33 industries, polled on what drives them in managing their companies in today's world.

For CEOs, creativity is now the most important leadership quality for success in business, outweighing even integrity and global thinking...
Here's how the numbers broke down:
About 60% of CEOs polled cited creativity as the most important leadership quality, compared with 52% for integrity and 35% for global thinking.
I think it would be interesting to see what the people that these CEO's lead would say if asked, what is the most important quality they would look for in a leader? Would they see creativity as being more important than integrity?
Maybe, maybe not. But for mine, I would hope not.
The Journey Continues!
