Momentum

Tuesday 6th July 2010

Momentum is one of those aspects of life that if we have it, we want to maintain it. If we are loosing it, we want to regain it. If we have lost it, we want to get it back.

It is an aspect of life that spreads far and wide. It is an aspect of life that we can find relevance and place in everyday activity. Momentum is something that we would like to see in our personal life, in our professional life, in our sporting pursuits, in our relationships and in our health and well being.

Snowball

But what are the key aspects to building momentum? What do we need to have available to us so that we can continue to move forward in a variety of everyday activities and pursuits?

  • Knowledge
  • Skill
  • Discipline
  • Talent
  • Resource
  • Opportunity

The simple answer would more than likely be yes to each one of these points and yes, to whole lot more of similar type responses.

But is there something that sits above all else? Is there one or two key points that lay the platform for all else to be built from?

Once again, simply put....yes!

  • Understanding
  • Awareness
  • Vision

Understanding in what is going on. Understanding in what has got you to where you are and why. Understanding of what is working for you and what is not. Understanding of what are the things you can control and what are the things you can't, and the effect of both.

Understanding

Awareness of standards and approach needed to regain, build or maintain momentum. Awareness of the type, depth and breadth of the competition or opposition. Awareness of the price you will need to pay to start, build or maintain momentum.

Awareness

Vision of what is your end result. Vision of what is the outcome you are really pursuing. Vision of the road you will need to follow to see those outcomes achieved. Vision of how you want to feel when the outcomes you have identified a have been accomplished.

vision

  • Understanding
  • Awareness
  • Vision

Three very important aspects in starting, building, regaining and maintaining momentum. How, when and where you use them will be dependent upon you, the situation you are in and what you want as an end result.

There are no right or wrong answers in how you use understanding, awareness and vision, however at the same time time there will always be a better way.

The Journey Continues!

After writing this I have had an experience with a client based around them building momentum. So I have a few more important aspects to discuss so keep checking in to see the next installment on how when and why you should continue to build momentum.

Also go over to our podcast and check out Episode 39 of Potential To Performance where I am asked a number of questions on the subject of Momentum.
