Leadership-How Do You Show Your Appreciation

Friday 7th May 2010

How do you show appreciation for those you lead?

  • A hand written note
  • Tickets to the movies
  • A day spa
  • Make a dinner for them and their partner at their favourite restaurant
  • A simple thank you
  • Leaving a sticky note on their computer
  • Announce them and their character and approach at a meeting
  • Invite them to your place for dinner
  • Introduce them and what they offer higher up the food chain

As you no doubt realise there are a million and one ways to highlight the significance of someone, what they do and how.

But as you contemplate your approach, don't fall into the trap that the majority of people before you have been caught up in. And that trap is to highlight your level of appreciation by the price or value of the way show that appreciation.

Basically if you really need to appreciate someone you spend $???? showing your appreciation. Where as if you just need to appreciate someone you will spend $??? showing that appreciation.

Now it is easy to see why this approach is as consistent as it is. But even with the vast amount of people that subscribe to this approach, it still doesn't make it right.

You see, the secret to recognition is to not base that recognition on cost, but to highlight it through worth. Not worth to you, or worth in price, but worth to the person you are showing appreciation for.

For the majority, me included, one of the greatest recognitions is simply done by taking the time to say thank you. And as simple as it is, it is still easily the most appreciated and effective.

Saying Thank You doesn't cost much, a bit of time and effort perhaps, however the worth, priceless!

So make sure the appreciation that you show, and the manner in which you show it, will mean something significant to the recipient. And that significance is based on worth, and not based on price.

Now as you go about contemplating how you will recognise the value of someone, remember that everyone will have a different need as far as appreciation is concerned. So don't do just what is easiest, do what is best, and do something that has a significance to the recipient, and high worth to it.

See the recipient isn't always blown away by the value of the appreciation, however they will moved by the worth of the appreciation. They will be elated when they realise the lengths you have gone to in showing your appreciation. It's the thought that counts that really comes into play at this time.

The significance of your appreciation and the length that you have gone to is highlighted by the fact that you have taken time to understand this person, you have delved deep into research to find out what is important to them and that understanding is signified through how you have shown your appreciation of them.

By you doing something that you know will really mean something to the recipient, you have shown them their true worth and the length and breadth of your appreciation. It might not have a high financial price tag, however it does highlight the non financial price you paid to recognise what has been done. It might not have been easy to recognise them in this way, but what has been done has true significance and high worth to the recipient.

So how, are you, going to make those around you feel valued?
