What Do You See

Tuesday 5th April 2011

In any given situation,

At any given time,

In any given place,

For any given reason,

How much do you actually see? How much do actually hear? How much do you actually feel? What do you actually smell?

See

Why would I ask these questions? Why should they be important to you?

Well way back in 1988 I asked the then Head Swimming Coach at the Australian Institute of Sport Bill Sweetenham..... What makes a great coach?

His reply:
"Everybody sees but very few observe. You want to be a great coach, be a great observer of people".

But what if you're not a coach, how does this apply to you?

Understanding through observation is not just about being a better coach, it is about every day life. Hence:
In any given situation,

At any given time,

In any given place,

For any given reason,

How much do you actually see? How much do actually hear? How much do you actually feel? What do you actually smell?

Hear

Take a minute and think about:

  • Investigators
  • Forensic scientists
  • Diagnosticians
  • Coaches
  • Behavioural analysts

These people have an ability, a need and a desire to see more than the normal person. They can't invent what it is they see, they can only recognise what is in front of them. However the difference is that they do see more than the norm.

They know where to look, what to look for. How to read the signs to get the answers they seek.

This same opportunity, however is available to you every single day. The answers to every question you have, is in most cases sitting right in front of you.

The secret is, if there is one:
Know where to stand so you can see what you need to.
Know what it is you are looking for and how to recognise it when you see it.

And remember:
What you see shapes what you change.
Where you look shapes what you see.
