Natural Ability
Tuesday 15th March 2011
They're a natural.
They are just naturally talented.
Born with natural ability.
That is one naturally gifted individual.

How many times have you heard these or other similar statements?
It seems every time anyone that is any good at anything, they are either a natural talent or born with natural ability.
Now I am not going to get into the genetics v development debate. That discussion is for another time.
But the thing is with all of this, is that the natural ability most allude to, is a totally different natural ability to the one I see.
Please allow me a minute to try and explain what I am talking about here.
When most people talk about someone being naturally gifted or naturally talented, they are alluding to the fact that the person has some high level skill, or exceptional ability.
It's like this skill or ability has just come from some genetic disposition or the like. The skill or ability was there from day one.
The starting point of this ability or this skill was ridiculously high to begin with, the ability or skill just miraculously appeared, training or development was never really required.
A level of skill and or ability that most people will never reach, regardless of how hard they work.
Once again, maybe, maybe not.
But here is where I differ on the natural ability aspect.
Perhaps they do have a natural inclination to a certain skill set. Maybe they do have some genetics that lend themselves to being pretty handy at certain things.
Or on the other hand, maybe they just have a natural desire not to put restrictions on themselves. Maybe they have a natural ability not to say, I can't do this. Maybe the natural gift is to believe they are capable of anything.

This is the natural ability that I am talking about.
It's not an arrogance. Its not an ego. I suppose on some level, it is not even a confidence. It is, at it's most basic, an ability, a desire, or a mission just not the be dragged into that place that has you saying, 'I cant do this'.
Lack of confidence, fear, lack of belief, call it what you will, but in the end it is a learned trait.
It is something through others teaching, our own experiences, through different situations we have learned, that perhaps there are some things you can't do, there are some things you don't want to do, there are things you do want to do but not sure you can.
Learned attitude, shaped thinking, or manufactured beliefs.
Then on the other hand, there are the naturally gifted that haven't learned the words cant, don't, won't.
They just see something and just have a go and keep having a go until they perfect it. No restrictions, no lack of confidence, no lack of belief.

They just believe it can be done by others, then it can be done by me.
And it will be done.
